Tribute from David Cole

Thank you for sharing. John was one of my mentors and probably didn't know it. His firm but gentle guiding hand influenced me on the numerous projects we worked on together. He would come down and direct me while I edited a song for a radio edit. What an education as we tried various cuts. I could see him picturing the edit in his mind. He also was the executive producer on the Steve Miller album I engineered at the tower. Steve certainly didn't need any help producing and John was content to sit in the back of the room and confer when an opinion was needed. He must've been the rabbit's foot of good luck, because that album went on to be #1 in 13 countries with the hit "Abracadabra". This was my first gold record as an engineer and launched my career. John also was a role model in the car department. He drove a Porsche! Zim had one, Carter had one, Menon had one... It was obvious to me a 911 was in my future. That first royalty check from Miller was going towards getting me into the "cool guys club". I'll never forget that smile, that laugh, his humble yet thoughtful and firm point of view. He was a gem and will be treasured. -DC
