My sister and I join you in mourning the death of the great John Palladino. Our father, Capitol classical music record producer Bob Myers, worked closely with John (though my parents referred to him as Johnny!) While the wonderful obituary by Stephen Peeples focuses John's work in pop and rock, our family remembers also his groundbreaking contributions to classical recordings, starting in 1949. He worked on many sessions with my dad including the now iconic Hollywood String Quartet records (the HSQ Wikipedia page includes the complete discography), the LA Chamber Orchestra, conductor Felix Slatkin and pianist Leonard Pennario. To add to his list of achievements, I thought you would be interested to know that two of John's early classical recordings with the Hollywood String Quartet, Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht and the Schubert Quintet in C Major, won the prestigious Gramophone Magazine Award in the “Historic Non-Vocal” category (for the Testament Records compact disc re-issue). The Gramophone Awards are among the highest honors in the classical music world. And John Palladino was the original engineer who brought the sound to life. Incidentally, the composer Schoenberg himself wrote the linear notes for the original LP issue.
